Start with the dress code and the venue: a daytime garden wedding and an evening ballroom reception call for very different outfits.

Read the dress code. Cocktail means knee to midi length. Black tie optional means a longer, more formal dress or a sharp set.

Skip white and ivory. Leave those for the couple. Very pale cream or champagne can look white in photos too.

Match the venue. Florals and lighter fabrics suit outdoor daytime weddings. Satin and deeper colors suit evening.

Plan for the whole day. Bring a light layer for the ceremony and choose something you can dance in.
